The pitch & sap of coniferous trees (such as Pine, Fir, & Spruce) are celebrated in many cultures for their powerful healing properties. This pine pitch salve is made from the sap and needles of the Piñon Pines that grow prolifically near our home in New Mexico. Piñon pitch has a rich tradition in this part of the country – many know it as a cure-all for skin problems, wounds, splinters, burns, and I’ve even heard some speak of its ability to slow the growth of cancer cells.
After harvesting the sap and needles, I infuse them in olive oil & then mix the infused oil with beeswax to form the salve. It has the most amazing, warming & opening smell – like the rich & resinous forests of the high desert. New Mexico locals from all walks of life can attest to the healing properties of this salve – it is especially renowned for its ability to pull out foreign objects from the skin, like wood splinters, glass, etc, by stimulating blood flow & catalyzing the immune system’s response. Piñon pitch salve is also anti-septic, and can help to ward off infections. Think of how the Piñon trees use it to protect and heal their wounds – If a branch is broken or cut from the tree, the sap oozes liberally from the tree, covering the wound & forming a protective and healing layer of pitch.
